Currently the sales by sales tax code shows the cost of materials for use tax. This report should show sales generated by those tax codes.

  1. Hello Ashlee,

I wanted to add some FYI to this for you and anyone else.

This report is not a sales report. It works like the Sales Tax Detail report. The amount in the sales column is the amount the tax was calculated on. We will create a KB Article explaining the differences between these reports.

In essence, sales tax reports show the amount the tax was calculated on. The word “Sales” is misleading in the report title. In the Help Topic for the Sales Tax Liability report, we “sort of” explain this. We will update this topic to truly explain it. We will define “sales” when used in this report as it is really referring to the taxable amount. If your tax item calculates off the retail price, that is the true sale amount. If your tax item calculates off direct cost, the taxable “sale” amount is the direct cost. If your tax item calculates off gross profit, the taxable “sale” amount is retail minus cost.

Sales Tax Liability is a summary of taxable activity for the reporting period.

Sales Tax Detail is a listing of the transaction details by tax item for the reporting period.

Sales by Tax Code is summary of taxable activity by tax code for the reporting period.

For either of the reports above, it is not recommended to compare this to the Income Statement as Sales Tax reports provide tax activity and not sales dollars.

Keep an eye on this help topic. We will be updating it:
